Weekly Devotional Introduction
March 16, 2026 The Short Distance Between Victory and Discouragement
Scripture: 1 Kings 18:36–39; 19:1–4
Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest victories recorded in the Old Testament. On Mount Carmel, God answered a simple sixty-three word prayer, and the fire of the LORD fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice. The people fell on their faces and cried, “The LORD, He is the God; the LORD, e is the God.”
Yet only a short time later Elijah received a threatening message from Jezebel, and suddenly the prophet who had just stood courageously before hundreds of false prophets was running for his life.
How quickly things can change.
One moment we are standing on the mountain of victory, watching God work in power. The next moment we feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and alone.
Elijah’s experience reminds us that the distance between victory and discouragement can sometimes be very short. Even faithful servants of God can become weary in the work.
But God did not abandon Elijah in his weakness. When Elijah fled into the wilderness and felt the journey was too great for him, the Lord sent an angel to minister to him. Elijah was given food, rest, and encouragement for the road ahead.
God understands our weakness far better than we do.
There are times when the burdens of life and ministry feel heavier than we expected. Yet even in those moments, the Lord is working behind the scenes.
When we feel like we cannot go any further, God in His mercy often comes to meet us along the way.
Today’s Reflection:
Have you experienced moments when discouragement followed victory? Remember that God’s care does not end when the battle is over.
Prayer:
Lord, when the journey feels too great for me, remind me that Your strength is greater than my weakness. Help me trust You even when I feel discouraged.
March 17, 2026 God Often Speaks in a Still Small Voice
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:11–12
When Elijah arrived at the mountain of God, the Lord revealed Himself in an unusual way.
First there was a great and strong wind that rent the mountains and brake the rocks. Then came an earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire.
But the Bible tells us that the LORD was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire.
Then Elijah heard something different — a still small voice.
So often we expect God to work through dramatic displays of power. We look for the extraordinary, the loud, and the overwhelming.
Yet God frequently works through quiet moments.
It was not the storm that spoke to Elijah’s heart. It was the gentle whisper of God’s voice.
Many believers miss the Lord’s guidance because they are only looking for the spectacular. But God often speaks through His Word, through prayer, through quiet conviction in the heart, and through the faithful preaching of Scripture.
The still small voice reminds us that God’s presence does not depend on noise or outward displays. His power is just as real when He speaks softly as when He moves mountains.
Often the greatest work God does in our lives happens in quiet moments when He speaks directly to our hearts.
When life feels loud and overwhelming, we must learn to slow down and listen.
God still speaks through His Word.
Today’s Reflection:
Are you listening for God’s voice through His Word and prayer, or only looking for dramatic answers?
Prayer:
Father, help me quiet my heart so I may hear Your voice. Teach me to listen for Your guidance through Your Word and through the gentle leading of Your Spirit.
March 18, 2026 God’s Work Is More Personal Than We Think
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:15–18
Elijah believed he was the only one left serving God. In his discouragement he said, “I, even I only, am left.”
From Elijah’s perspective, the entire work of God seemed to depend on him.
But the Lord quickly showed Elijah that his understanding was incorrect.
God mentioned three men by name — Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha — whom Elijah was to anoint for future work. Each of these men had different personalities and different roles in God’s plan.
Then the Lord revealed something even more surprising:
“Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal.”
Elijah thought he was alone. But God knew every faithful believer who had remained true.
What a reminder of how personally God knows His people.
The Lord knows every heart that is faithful to Him. He sees every act of obedience that others may never notice. He knows every home where someone quietly worships Him.
God had been watching every knee that had not bowed to Baal and every mouth that had not kissed the idol.
Nothing escapes God’s attention.
Even when we feel unnoticed or alone in our service for God, the Lord knows exactly where we are and what we are doing.
His work is always more personal than we realize.
Today’s Reflection:
Do you ever feel like your service for God goes unnoticed? Remember that the Lord sees every act of faithfulness.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for knowing every detail of my life. Help me remain faithful, even when I cannot see the full work You are doing.
March 19, 2026 God’s Work Is More Profitable Than We Think
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:18
When Elijah looked at his ministry, he thought very little had been accomplished.
He saw opposition, threats, and spiritual darkness. From his perspective, it seemed as though he had labored with little result.
Yet God revealed that there were seven thousand people in Israel who had not bowed to Baal.
Elijah did not even know they existed.
This reminds us that we cannot measure God’s work by what we see.
Many times the Lord uses our obedience to accomplish things we will not fully understand until eternity. A sermon, a testimony, a kind word, or a faithful act of service may influence someone in ways we never realize.
Elijah likely never imagined that his preaching and faithfulness had helped influence thousands of people to remain loyal to the Lord.
But God knew.
Our responsibility is not to measure the results of our work. Our responsibility is to be faithful to what God has called us to do.
The results belong to Him.
When we reach heaven, we may discover that God used our small acts of obedience to bring about far greater results than we ever imagined.
God’s work is always more profitable than we think.
Today’s Reflection:
Are you are tempted to judge your service for God by visible results? Faithfulness matters more than what we can ever measure.
Prayer:
Father, help me serve You faithfully without worrying about results. Teach me to trust that You are working even when I cannot see it.
March 20, 2026 God Is Thousands Better Than We Think
Scripture: 1 Kings 19:18
God’s final message to Elijah was simple but powerful:
“Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel.”
Elijah thought he was the only one. God revealed that there were thousands.
The Lord was showing Elijah something important — God was far greater than Elijah had imagined.
Sometimes we limit God because we only see what is directly in front of us. Our perspective becomes small because our understanding is limited.
But God is always working on a scale far beyond what we can see.
The best we can imagine about God’s power, mercy, and wisdom still falls short of the truth.
He is wiser than we think.
He is stronger than we think.
He is more gracious than we think.
He is more merciful than we think.
God is thousands better than we think He is.
The enemy may seem loud and powerful, but God is never threatened by the size of the opposition. He is not limited by time, numbers, or circumstances.
One day God will fully defeat evil and establish His perfect kingdom.
Until then, we can trust that His plans are always greater than our understanding.
No matter what situation you face today, remember this truth:
God is greater than you think He is.
Today’s Reflection:
In what areas of your life do you need to trust that God is greater than your circumstances?
Prayer:
Lord, help me remember that Your power, mercy, and wisdom are greater than I can imagine. Strengthen my faith to trust You completely.
