The Spirit Filled Life [Part 2] Romans 8:5–17 (KJV)  “The Mind of the Spirit”

Key Thought: Our standing is settled forever in Christ, but our fellowship is lived moment by moment by walking in the Spirit.

 Jan 26, 2026 A Mind Aligned

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:5-6 (KJV) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Today’s Reflection: Romans 8:5 (KJV) teaches that “mind” is more than thoughts — it is the inner disposition, the bent of the soul, the direction of the heart.
Paul shows two life-patterns:

Ø  Flesh-minded: driven by self, sin, pride, independence.

Ø  Spirit-minded: driven by God, holiness, dependence, surrender.

This is not describing a Christian who sometimes struggles, but a life direction: what you “set” yourself on.
The Spirit-filled life begins when the believer stops asking, “How can I win?” and starts yielding:
“Lord, align my heart with Yours.”

Reflection Questions:

Ø  What most naturally “pulls” your attention throughout the day?

Ø  Do you seek life and peace in Christ — or try to manufacture it in the flesh?

Prayer: Lord, I confess that my natural disposition is not toward Thee, but toward myself. Align my heart with the Holy Spirit. Give me a Spirit-governed disposition, not merely spiritual vocabulary. Let my mind be set on Thee so that I may walk in life and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verse for application:

Colossians 3:2 (KJV) Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Jan 27, 2026 Flesh Confessed, Spirit Blessed

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:7-8 (KJV) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Today’s Reflection: Paul does not say the flesh is merely weak—he says it is hostile (“enmity”) toward God.
That’s why the flesh cannot be improved. It cannot be educated into holiness. It cannot be trained into obedience.

This is a crucial truth for victorious living:

Ø  The flesh cannot be “fixed.”

Ø  The flesh must be reckoned dead.

Ø  Victory comes not by self-effort but by Spirit dependence.

The Christian life is not difficult; it is impossible — apart from the Spirit.
When we confess our helplessness, we are positioned to walk in His power.

Reflection Questions:

Ø  Where have you been trying to “please God” by sheer willpower?

Ø  Are you trusting in discipline alone, or dependence on the Spirit?

Prayer: Father, I confess that in my flesh I cannot please Thee. I renounce confidence in self. I yield my plans, my desires, and my pride. Bless me with the Spirit’s power where my flesh has failed. Teach me to walk in surrender and victory. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Verse for application: John 15:5 (KJV) ...for without me ye can do nothing.

Jan 28, 2026 Indwelt and Built

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:9-11 (KJV) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you...
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness...
he...shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Today’s Reflection: This passage brings strong assurance:
“The Spirit of God dwell in you.”

The Spirit’s indwelling is not a feeling—it is a fact.
The Christian does not fight for acceptance, but fights from acceptance.

Notice the repeated “in you”:

Ø  The Spirit dwells in you

Ø  Christ is in you

Ø  The Spirit gives life in you

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is not merely assisting you—He is indwelling you.
This is not a self-help program. This is resurrection power.

So when your old nature speaks, and temptation presses, you may answer:
“That’s not who I am anymore.”

Reflection Questions:

Ø  Do you live as though the Spirit lives in you—or as though you’re alone?

Ø  Are you believing God’s truth about your identity?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that I am not “in the flesh,” but “in the Spirit.” Thank You that Your Spirit dwells in me. Help me to live from the inside out. Quicken me where I have been dull, weary, and defeated. Raise my affection to Thee and my obedience to Thy Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verse for application: Ephesians 1:19-20 (KJV) ...the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe... when he raised him from the dead...

Jan 29, 2026 Debt Rejected, Life Directed

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:12-13 (KJV) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Today’s Reflection: Paul says something powerful: you don’t owe the flesh anything.

Ø  The flesh promises pleasure but pays in pain.

Ø  The flesh promises freedom but produces bondage.

Victory is not achieved by “trying harder.” Paul says mortification happens “through the Spirit.”
The Spirit-filled life does not mean the believer has no conflict — it means the believer has a new power to say “no.”

This is practical holiness:

Ø  Not just avoiding sin outwardly

Ø  But putting to death the deeds of the body inwardly

Ø  Through the Spirit’s power, you can refuse the old disposition and walk in newness.

Reflection Questions:

Ø  What “old debts” are you still paying to the flesh?

Ø  What specific “deed of the body” must be mortified this week?

Prayer: Father, I declare today that I am not a debtor to the flesh. I owe it nothing. By Thy Spirit, help me mortify the deeds of the body. Give me grace to refuse sin quickly and to return to fellowship when I fail. Direct my life toward Christlikeness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verse for application: Galatians 5:16 (KJV) Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Jan 30, 2026 Led as Sons, Not Left as Ones

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:14-17 (KJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption...
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God...”

Today’s Reflection: The Spirit-filled life is not merely power for living—it is assurance for belonging.
Paul says we are:

Ø  Led by the Spirit

Ø  Adopted as sons

Ø  Freed from bondage and fear

Ø  Assured by the Spirit’s witness

A lost man is spiritually dead — he doesn’t need improvement, he needs resurrection.
But the saved man is alive — he doesn’t need to earn sonship, he needs to walk as a son.

This is where fellowship becomes moment-by-moment:

Ø  The Spirit leads

Ø  The child follows

Ø  The Father is near

The Spirit-filled life is not a lonely struggle — it is a family walk with God.

Reflection Questions:

Ø  Do you live like you are Saved — Secure — or like a Struggle — Scared?

Ø  Where might the Spirit be leading you into obedience right now?

Prayer: Abba Father, thank You that I am adopted, not abandoned. Thank You that the Holy Spirit bears witness that I am Thy child. Lead me today. Deliver me from fear and bondage. Help me walk in the joy of fellowship and the confidence of sonship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verse for application: 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
